The complete list of Grammy nominees are upon us. 2015 has been a kickass year for music, and for the most part, the Academy does reward artists for that, but some acts are noticeably missing from the list. Because Hello? Where are the nominations for The War On Drugs’ Lost In The Dream? Or new artist nominees for Sylvan Esso or FKA Twigs? All three of these artists have been topping year-end lists-but somehow the Academy has completely overlooked their stellar work. (Ok, FKA Twigs was nominated for Best Record Packaging, but that doesn’t really count as much as a new artist nom.) And what about Royal Blood for Best Rock Album or Bombay Bicycle Club for Best Alternative Music Album? Both of these English bands have had HUGE years, and have both been shortlisted for the Mercury Prize. If the list reads to you like it does to me, it seems the Academy hugely favors artists who have dominated radio waves this year (Meghan Trainor, Taylor Swift, Iggy Azalea). But as we all know, so much good music is found elsewhere.

That said, however, there are some well deserving folks on this year’s list. Sam Smith, HAIM, and Bastille are all favorites who ought to take home New Artists, but if Sam’s year continues to go as it has (up) for him, he’s going to take home that prize. We saw Lorde reign in 2014, but 2015 belongs to Sam, who is nominated for six awards this time around.

And though we are all guilty of singing along to certain (ahem, Taylor Swift) songs when they come on the radio, I sincerely hope that Hozier takes home the Record of The Year award, the other songs don’t come close to being as powerful as “Take Me To Church” is. But these grievances aside, I haven’t a clue how these nominee lists are created, so I’ll rest my case and leave it to the Academy.
