Artist: Little Mix
I feel like I might confuse a few people with this declaration but here it is anyway: Little Mix is a Very Important Band to me – the capitals were necessary. While the quartet was formed on a UK reality show and took the definition of a manufactured path to prominence, these ladies deserve every second of their success.
It’s hard for me to verbalize why Little Mix means so much to me, and that’s mainly because there is so much about them that makes me say: Yes. Good. Very Very Good. Since their creation on the eighth season of the UK’s The X Factor, Jade Thirwall, Jesy Nelson, Perrie Edwards, and Leigh-Anne Pinnock have promoted the ideas of a positive self-image and female empowerment, their vocal harmonies are spectacularly on point, their individual senses of style are unique and inspiring, and their most recent release – their sophomore effort, Salute – is a competition-slaying call-to-arms for “ladies all across the world” to get up, go out, and take on the world. Every time I listen to the title track – which is often because it’s a killer tune – I feel the desire to strap on my six inch platform Jeffery Campbell’s and face the world head-on. And while songs off of their debut album, DNA, such as “Wings,” the title track “DNA“, and their collaboration with Missy Elliot titled “How Ya Doin’?” showed their potential for greatness, Salute is a twelve track declaration that Little Mix has hit their stride and is ready to demand your attention.
The two singles off the album so far demonstrate their versatility and their power: one being an upbeat jam meant to get you out of your seat and on to the dance floor while the other is a power ballad encouraging us to speak up and shout out and embrace our inner power.
(also, warning: this video may cause watery eyes)
Little Mix just finished their run as an opening act for Demi Lovato’s Neon Lights tour and are set to head out on their own headlining UK and Ireland Salute Tour this May. Most excitingly – for me at least – last week they announced an American leg has been added, with details to come.
My only wish is for the same warm welcome to be extended to these lovely ladies as other british imports have experienced recently because, in my book, the girls of Little Mix – both as individuals and through their music – exemplify what’s good in this world.
